Helston is a town and civil parish in Cornwall, England. It is most likely where my family name 'Whitaker' came from. On returning to NZ after nine years I found the urge to look into my heritage. Being such a young country and many kiwis decending from the UK I expected more pakehas embracing their history after such a strong and timely surge in maori culture. But instead, Pakeha seem to be trying embrace the Maori culture as their own. We are distancing ourselves from our english heritage. We want to be New Zealanders, we want to stand a lone. We want to look back into the history of New Zealand or more to the point, the history of this land and its people.
