'My Postcode is Not A Virus' explores the 'scourge' and spread of the Aucklander. As a born and bred West Aucklander, it has always amused me how Aucklanders are treated and perceived. From living in London to moving to Mangawhai, there is a backlash towards Aucklanders, a fear that we may spread and envelope New Zealand like a disease. Enter Covid 19 and the NZ housing crisis. A migration of Aucklanders are now spreading across the country looking for cheaper housing and better lifestyles. Why are people so afraid?. Is the fear warranted? Will Aucklanders turn their sleepy towns into bustling chaos? This work is the first of a series I plan to create. It is heavily textured and what I would call a 2D sculpture mixed medium artwork. I enjoy the subject of tribalism, nativism and stereotypes. The word xenophobia comes from the greek word 'Xenos' which means 'stranger or guest'. So which one is an Aucklander? Stranger or guest, or perhaps in time, local ; )
